Those who follow me closely may be surprised to learn that I think neither "community notes are bad!" nor "community notes are good!" but rather some discrete, more complex third thing: it depends on the details! Especially around transparency and trust.Let me take you on a trip down memory lane... 1/8

Xitter's version of Community Notes, née Birdwatch, launched in January 2021 and the acquisition was completed at the end of October 2022.Right when the acquisition was getting started, it was extremely common to see Community Notes on the posts of the new owner, especially around policy announcements. It was quite satisfying to see those corrections, and one wonders if Z will get the same treatment here. Like this fact, for example. 2/8

Lately, I've been caught in this weird pattern of argument with friends. It's not that we disagree on the answer - we can't even seem to agree on what question we're discussing. It's like a conversational ships-passing-in-the-night thing, or a motte/bailey without the usual rhetorical retreat. In the end, we're both left feeling misunderstood. 1/

A common example these days: we'll be talking about a specific claim making the rounds about immigrants. Things I consider clear lies like "democrats are flying people in under cover of darkness to vote" and "Haitians are eating pets". Many times this has been turned around to me as "well, the democrats do have a more permissive immigration policy so people have a point."It's related, sure, but... are we going to talk about the first question? Does an adjacent idea excuse it all? 2/

"" Indeed Adamala and three other scientific colleagues are the recipients of a 2019 grant in which they explained that they “seek to design, construct, and safely deploy synthetic mirror cells. But as they looked into it more, through collaboration on the 299-page technical report, she and her colleagues became convinced that it just wasn’t worth it: All four have now joined the call in Science for work to be halted. “We’re saying, ‘We’re not going to do it,’” Adamala told the Times. I'm grateful for these scientists who were willing to take an honest look at pros and cons of developing certain technologies.vox.com/futur… 2/2
